Several key members have opted out of the European Union’s emergency meeting in response to Donald Trump’s victory in the US election in November. The meeting was called to align the interest of the members of the Union in their approach towards the United States and to the newly elected Donald Trump. Mr. Trump’s several comments during the campaign have made some of the traditional allies of the United States very worried.
Mr. Trump has suggested that many of the NATO members are not paying up in line with their interest and capacity and the United States under Trump administration will not be protecting those if they don’t pay up their fair share. What worries some of the European States is that throughout the campaign Mr. Trump on several occasions described Russian president Vladimir Putin as a better and stronger leader than current US President Barrack Obama. Many of the European countries fear that Donald Trump would be softer towards Russia, which they see as an aggressor and major security threat.
However, this effort by the European members suffered some serious setbacks as the finance ministers from some key member states refused to join in. Finance ministers from the Union’s two major military power; France and Britain refused to join the meeting. Foreign minister from Hungary whose leader Victor Orban supports Donald Trump boycotted the meeting calling it Hysterical.
While the major concern remains NATO, free trade and Trans-Pacific Partnership are also on the agenda.
