Global Geo-political Series: German FM expresses worry as Trump likely to cancel Iran deal

Speaking on Sunday, German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel has expressed concern that the U.S. President might move the United States out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), popularly known as Iran nuclear agreement that was reached upon by Iran and six world powers including both Germany and the United States under the previous Obama administration. Gabriel reportedly said that the United States is likely to quit the Iran agreement next week and it creates danger not only for Germany but the international community as a whole.  According to him, the world will change if the United States withdraw from the agreement.

This is not the first time Mr. Gabriel has expressed worries over the prospect of the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement but he joined the chorus of policymakers around the world urging President Trump not to go ahead with cancellation. In the previous week, the European Union, foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the United States to maintain the current status quo with regard to the agreement. French President Emmanuel Macron has also warned against such a move. Iran has warned that it would move out of the agreement if the United States doesn’t certify the deal.

President Trump is expected to announce his decision this week.
