Here are some key events to keep a tab on,
- Iraq vs. Kurdistan: After amassing large military forces near Kurdish border over the past week, Iraq has reportedly launched an offensive to take back control of the disputed region of Kirkuk which is home to an important airbase and valuable oil well. Kurdistan took control of Kirkuk from Islamic State fighters which took control of the region from Iraqi government back in 2014.
- Iran nuclear agreement: U.S. President Donald Trump refused to certify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement but rather than decertify it, he has pushed the matter to Congress which needs to decide over the next 60 days whether to certify or re-impose sanctions on Iran. Saudi Arabia’s King Salman welcomed the decision. United States’ UN ambassador Nikki Haley confirmed that the U.S. will remain part of the deal, as of now.
- EU, Catalonia, and Spain: Spain’s 5-day ultimatum to Catalan leader to deice on Independence ends on Monday. So far, Mr. Puigdemont, the leader of Catalonia independence refused to back down on Independence claims but called for talks with Madrid.
- Venezuela: Venezuela’s Maduro government has won an important regional election, spoiling opposition’s aim to weaken the government.
- German regional election: Germany’s Social Democrats (37.5 percent) have beaten incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (35 percent) in the regional election in Lower Saxony.
- Austria election: Top candidate of anti-immigrant Peoples Party (OVP) and Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz is set to become world’s youngest national leader. OVP has won 31 percent of the vote, followed by anti-immigrant FPO party which won 27.4 percent.
- China’s 19th Party Congress: On October 18th, President Xi Jinping will mark the beginning of China’s 19th Party Congress.
