Global Geo-political Series: Russia Vetoes UN Security Council resolution on Syria chemical weapons probe

Russia has vetoed a United Nation’s Security Council (UNSC) resolution to renew the mandate for the UN mission that has been investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria by the Syrian government. After the Russian proposal to postpone the matter was rejected, Moscow chose to veto the resolution. A renewal is necessary for the UN mission to continue its investigation in Syria as the current mandate is set to expire on 17th of November this year.

The mandate to prolong the investigation was drafted by the United States and secured 11 votes. Both Russia and Bolivia voted against the resolution, while China and Kazakhstan abstained. According to the Russian government, the UN mission performed poorly as it never visited the site of the alleged attack but relied on evidence collected by militant groups controlling the area. It alleges that while experts visited Syrian airfields, it didn’t collect any ground samples from there, which is necessary to establish that the base has been used by the Syrian government to stage the chemical attack.

Later this week, the Joint Committee of UN and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is scheduled to release reports on its findings so far.

After inaugurating as the President of the United States President Trump ordered an attack on Syrian government-controlled Shyrat airbase in response to an alleged chemical attack by the Syrian government.
