Global Geo-political Series: Russia condemns Syria attack; likely to call for UNSC meeting

Russian foreign ministry has condemned last night’s attack by the United States on Syrian air base near Idlib. The United States have launched about 60 tomahawk missiles in response to the alleged chemical weapon attack by the regime of Syrian President Bashar-al- Assad. Bolivia has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting to be held behind closed doors on Friday to discuss the US missile attack against Syria, a senior Security Council diplomat told Reuters.

In response to the US attacks, Russia, the only country to be invited by Syria to help fighting terrorism has issued a statement and it says the followings,

  • On the night of April 7 US hit the Syrian government forces, using as a pretext the situation with himintsidentom in Idlib province. Not bothering to find out anything, the United States went to the show of force, a military opposition to the country, which is fighting against international terrorism. The US is not the first time such a show harebrained approach that only aggravates the existing problems in the world and poses a threat to international security. The very presence of US troops and other countries on the territory of Syria, without the consent of the Government or the decision of the UN Security Council, is a gross, obvious and unwarranted violation of international law.
  • We have repeatedly stated their willingness to cooperate to address the hottest issues of today, among which in the first place - the fight against international terrorism. But we will never accept the illegitimate actions against the legitimate Syrian authorities, who are implacable war against international terrorism for a long time.
  • The Russian side is suspended by the Memorandum on prevention of incidents and ensuring aviation safety during operations in Syria, signed with the United States.
  • We call on the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.

The suspension of the flight safety memorandum risks putting Russia and the United States in direct military conflict with each other in Syria.
