Saudi Arabia’s new Crown Prince Mohammad bin-Salman (MbS), who replaced his elder cousin Mohammad bin-Naef as the crown price under a royal decree has declared war against terrorism vowing to wipe out terrorists from the face of the earth using resources available to the Islamic Military Alliance (IMA) that has so far functioned only in paper since its formation in 2015. During the weekend summit, the alliance decided to declare war against no particular country but against a faceless enemy.
At the summit, where representatives of 40-Muslim majority countries gathered in Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammad bin-Salman said in his opening remarks, “Today we start the pursuit of terrorism, and we see its defeat in many facets around, the world especially in Muslim countries...We will continue to fight it until we see its defeat….In past years, terrorism has been functioning in all of our countries... this ends today, with this alliance…. The biggest threat from terrorism and extremism is not only killing innocent people and spreading hate but tarnishing the reputation of our religion and distorting our belief….We will not allow this to happen”. The Islamic Alliance doesn’t include Shia-Muslim countries like Iran or Iraq. The alliance includes Qatar but due to the blockade by Saudi Arabia and other countries like Bahrain, and Egypt, there were no representatives present from Doha.
While the targets are terrorists, many are calling this a proxy war against Iran, which according to Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries, is the sponsor of terrorism. The Crown Prince has even called Iran’s supreme leader ‘Hitler of the Middle East’.
