Catalonia’s regional parliament will convene today under the leadership of Carles Puigdemont to decide on the future course of action as it became clear that the Spanish leadership in Madrid led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy would trigger a provision in the constitution known as Article 155 to nullify Catalonia’s autonomy and strip officials in the region of power. Triggering the article would theoretically transfer the command of the police force in the region to the hands of Spanish government along with public broadcasting. However, such requires approval by the Spanish parliament, which is expected to convene tomorrow.
Catalonia’s independence bid has triggered the worst crisis for the Spanish government in several decades, which has already led to a revision in forecasted growth as Catalonia contributes about one-fifth to Spanish GDP and one-fourth to Spanish exports. Rating agencies have also put Spanish ratings on watch over the crisis.
The latest report suggests that the first minister of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, who was due to appear before Senate in Madrid on Thursday evening will not be travelling there, according to the speaker of Catalan parliament, Carme Forcadell. Two regional parliamentary groups confirmed the Speaker's message, communicated to them shortly after 3 pm on Wednesday. The Speaker has also shifted the timing of the regional parliamentary session in response to the central government's Article 155 measures from 10 am on Thursday morning to 4 pm on Thursday afternoon.
