An Arab league Committee made up of foreign ministers of Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Palestine Liberation Organizations (PLO), and Jordon met on Saturday to follow up on the decision taken by the U.S. President Donald Trump to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move that overturned decades-old U.S. policy in the Middle East.
The foreign minister of Jordon, Ayman Safadi who is heading the committee said that the committee seeks to counter the U.S. decision by lobbying the United Nations to recognize the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, “We will confront the decision by seeking a (UN) resolution, an international one, to recognize a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital” and added that President Trump’s decision was a dangerous violation of law which had no legal basis.
Despite Trump’s threat to cut off U.S. assistance to states that stand against its decision, except the United States, all 14 members of the United Nation’s Security Council voted in favor of an Egyptian resolution that counters United States’ unilateral move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In addition to that, on December 21, the UN General Assembly overwhelming adopted a Turkish-sponsored resolution rejecting Trump’s move by a vote of 128-9, with 35 abstentions.
