Israel’s friction with the European countries is on the rise, especially after President Trump moved to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
- Right after President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini protested the decision and said that the United States’ unilateral move is not recognized by the European Union as well as the United Nations.
- Al the European countries at a UN general assembly voting voted against President Trump’s recognition.
- After Trump announced that the United States is going to withhold funding to the tune of $63 million to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) for their refusal to come to the negotiating table to facilitate the peace process, the European Union at the donors meeting announced new funding for the PLO to the tune of €42.5 million euro.
- Israel’s friction with Poland increased as Poland signed a controversial law that says that poles were not responsible for millions of Jews murdered by Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
- Friction increased with Ireland too as the country proposed to cut exports originating from illegal (according to EU/UN) settlements in the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem.
- Israel is also infuriated by the decision made by Slovenia to recognize Palestine as an independent state. Israel has warned Slovenia that such recognition would be detrimental to the bilateral relations.
As Israel's faith in the Trump administration rises, it is in decline with Europe.
