Global Geopolitical Series: Key updates from across the world

Here are some key events to keep a tab on,

  • Israel-Palestine-Jerusalem: An Arab League Committee made up of six foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Jordon, Morocco, and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) met on Saturday to decide on the course of future actions to counter President Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. According to Jordanian foreign minister, the league decided to pursue the United Nations to recognize Palestine’s statehood with East Jerusalem being its capital.  
     
  • Iran protests: Reports suggest that protesters have been defeated across the country amid communications cutoff, brutal crackdown, and deployment of Iran’s revolutionary guards.
     
  • U.S. and Pakistan: The U.S. has cut its aid to Pakistan last week. The amount that is being held could be as high as $1.1 billion.
     
  • Korean Peninsula: In response to a reporter’s question whether he would talk to the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un over the phone, Trump said that he is open to such talks, “ Sure, I always believe in talking…..He [Kim Jong-Un] knows I'm not messing around….Not even a little bit, not even one-percent. He understands that. At the same time, if we can come up with a very peaceful and good solution. If something can happen and something can come out of these talks; that would be a great thing for all of humanity." North and South Korea are set to hold high-level talks tomorrow, first such meeting in at least two years.
