Global Geopolitical Series: Moscow points veiled finger at U.S. over drone attack as U.S. spy plane spotted during incidence

Last Saturday, Russia’s main airbase in Kheimim in the Syrian Latakia province came under a massive drone attack. According to Russian ministry of defense, Russian military has repelled a massive drone attack on its main airbase in Syria, which was reportedly carried out by militants using 10 unmanned combat aerial vehicles, while three more attempted a strike against the Russian maritime logistics base located in the city of Tartus. According to Russian defense ministry, all of the drones were detected by anti-aircraft defense systems well in advance and seven of them were then successfully shot down by the Russian Panzir-S air-defense system. The Russian radio electronic warfare specialists also managed to override the operating systems of six more drones, and eventually gained control over the drones. Three of them were destroyed when they hit the ground, while another three were landed intact outside the base controlled by Russian forces. No casualties were reported.

While Russia didn’t blame any particular country for the attack, however, latest comments and analysis points a veiled finger at Washington, which deflected any accusations well before any were made saying such technologies are openly available in the market. The Tuesday’s statement from Russia didn’t point any figure but added that the technology used in the attack was telling.

Now Russia is adding that a strange coincidence took place during the attack. The Russian ministry of defense noted that a US Navy Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft was flying over the region between the Russian bases in Latakia and Tartus for some four hours around the time of the drone attack.
