Global Geopolitical Series: Trump says open to direct talks with Kim Jong-Un

Despite war like exchanges of words between the U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-Un, in response to a reporter’s question on whether he would talk to the North Korean leader over the phone, Trump said he is always open to talks. The remarks came amid easing of tensions in the Korean peninsula. Both North and South Korea have agreed to hold high-level talks on January 9th that would reportedly involve North’s participation in the upcoming winter Olympics in February to be held in Seoul this year and other matters to improve inter-Korean relations. This will be the first such talk in at least two years.

In response to the reporter, Trump said, “Sure, I always believe in talking…..He [Kim Jong-Un] knows I'm not messing around….Not even a little bit, not even one-percent. He understands that. At the same time, if we can come up with a very peaceful and good solution. If something can happen and something can come out of these talks; that would be a great thing for all of humanity."

North Korea’s closest ally China, welcomed the talks. Geng Shuang, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, “We hope that all relevant parties on the Korean peninsula issue will seize upon the opportunity of the Winter Olympics to meet each other halfway, return to the correct path of peacefully solving problems through dialogue and consultation".
