Factors which cause development of sleep apnea include obesity, life style habits such as smoking, alcohol, irregular sleep patterns, and substance abuse. The risk of sleep apnea is higher in the age group above 50-60 years.
It is found that more than 18 million adults across different age groups have sleep apnea and approx two to three percent cases are related to childhood OSA. The numbers are much higher in children with habitual snoring. The most common conditions associated with this disorder include atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, respiratory diseases, stroke, congestive heart failure, obesity, and hypertension and type II diabetes.
