Entertainment Weekly has just come out with exclusive first-look photos of "Godzilla: King of Monsters."
"Godzilla: King of Monsters" is a sequel to the 2014 “Godzilla” movie, which starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston.
The first photo shows the mighty Godzilla in an iconic pose, spewing his atomic breath into the sky. The movie's director, Michael Dougherty, hints at the possibility that the scene is actually Godzilla calling for aid, rather than a catastrophic monster attack.
“King of Monsters” plans to bring back some familiar names from Godzilla's past, such as King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, the last of whom Dougherty says he is personally excited for.
As well as monsters from the past, Watanabe, along with Sally Hawkins, who appeared in the 2014 film as members of the mysterious monster-hunting organization, Monarch, will be returning in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.”
The second image in the first-look pictures shows us glimpses of the main cast, with Vera Farmiga, who is slated to play Dr. Emma Russel, with Millie Bobby Brown playing her daughter Madison. Kyle Chandler, who co-starred in Peter Jackson's own 2005 remake of “King Kong,” will be making a comeback to this monster film as he plays Dr. Russel's ex-husband who goes on a rescue mission to save his ex-wife and child. He will be helped by “Godzilla” 2014 alumni Watanabe and Hawkins.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is also tied to the well-received 2017 "King Kong" reboot, "Kong: Skull Island," which starred Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, and Tom Hiddleston, by virtue of being part of Warner Bros.' Monsterverse media franchise. Beyond that, Godzilla is also set to return in 2020 to duel with Kong in “Godzilla vs Kong.”
"Godzilla: King of Monsters" will be released on May 31, 2019, while the epic battle between "Godzilla vs Kong" is looking at a May 29, 2020 release date.
