Google LLC is shutting down its Dropcam, Dropcam Pro, and Nest Secure services next week. This means that these smart home devices powered by Google will stop working on April 8.
Ahead of the discontinuation, the tech giant posted a final reminder for users to be aware and take necessary steps before the devices are officially deactivated. In particular, Google is urging Nest x Yale Lock owners who use Nest Secure to take necessary steps as they now have to move to Nest Connect for the service.
End of Updates and Support for Smart Home Devices
As per Android Headlines, Google already ended the updates for Dropcam, Dropcam Pro, and Nest Secure. It has stopped any modifications on these smart home products, and this also affects the tech firm’s Works with Nest (WWN) program, which gives third-party devices access to and control of Google Nest products.
The WWN developer program shut down in September 2023, and Nest Secure and Dropcam will follow suit next week. Since support for the mentioned devices will be discontinued, Google is now offering substitutes so users can still use the products.
Google’s Suggested Alternative Options
The Verge reported that the Nest Secure security system will also be deactivated, and some eligible users are expected to receive an email about an alternative service. Google offers the ADT Self Setup smart home security system that incorporates ADT security with the Nest devices. This will cost $200 in Google Store, and the offer will expire on May 7.
Another replacement option is called the Google Home script editor, which Google is launching in a few months. This platform allows users to set up advanced home automation for their existing devices since they will no longer be functional in the Nest app starting April 8th.
“On April 8, 2024, Dropcam and Dropcam Pro will no longer work and you will no longer be able to manage your camera using the Nest app. In addition, no new video history will be recorded from your camera starting April 8th. Google Nest Team said in a blog post. “Eligible Dropcam and Dropcam Pro users were emailed an offer towards a Nest Cam (indoor, wired). Nest Cam is part of our next generation of cameras with more helpful features like HDR and built-in intelligence.”
