German retail sales fell sharply in July, significantly missing market expectations and raising fresh concerns about consumer demand in Europe’s largest economy.
Retail sales declined 3.4% in July compared with the previous month, according to data released Tuesday by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office. The monthly contraction was considerably worse than economists had anticipated.
Analysts surveyed by Reuters had forecast German retail sales to increase by 0.4% during the month. The unexpectedly steep decline therefore represented a major downside surprise and suggested that household spending remained under pressure at the start of the third quarter.
Retail sales figures are closely monitored as an indicator of consumer confidence and domestic economic activity. Because household consumption represents an important component of Germany’s economy, a sustained decline in retail spending could weigh on the country’s broader growth outlook.
The July data adds to investor scrutiny of Germany’s economic performance as markets assess the strength of consumer activity and the outlook for the eurozone economy. Weaker retail demand can indicate that households are becoming more cautious about discretionary purchases, potentially creating additional challenges for retailers and other consumer-focused businesses.
The 3.4% monthly fall was particularly notable given expectations for a modest recovery. The gap between the actual reading and the 0.4% increase forecast by economists highlights the extent to which German consumer spending underperformed market projections during July.
Investors and economists will likely watch upcoming German economic indicators for signs of whether the retail sales decline was temporary or reflects a broader slowdown in household demand.
Germany’s Federal Statistical Office has published additional details regarding the July retail sales figures on its official website.
