Google Cloud, one of Alphabet’s fastest-growing divisions, has entered into a five-year strategic partnership with Liberty Global aimed at accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence and cloud technologies across Liberty Global’s extensive European telecom operations. The agreement highlights the growing role of AI partnerships in the telecom sector as operators seek innovation, efficiency, and new revenue streams.
Liberty Global, which serves around 80 million fixed and mobile connections across Europe, plans to deploy Google’s Gemini AI models alongside advanced cloud tools to enhance both consumer-facing and internal operations. A key focus of the partnership is the development of new digital services, including AI-powered search and content discovery features on Liberty Global’s Horizon TV platform. These enhancements are expected to improve user experience by delivering more personalized and intuitive entertainment services.
Customer service automation is another major pillar of the deal. By leveraging Google Cloud’s AI capabilities, Liberty Global aims to streamline support operations, reduce response times, and improve overall customer satisfaction. According to Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries, the expanded collaboration represents a significant milestone in the company’s digital transformation journey.
Beyond AI and cloud services, the partnership also deepens commercial ties between the two companies. Liberty Global’s operating units—such as Virgin Media O2 in the UK, Telenet in Belgium, VodafoneZiggo in the Netherlands, and Sunrise in Switzerland—will offer a wider range of Google products, including Pixel smartphones, smartwatches, and smart home devices, to their customers.
The agreement builds on existing collaborations and extends into network infrastructure. Liberty Global intends to use the partnership to improve network reliability, security, and automation, while exploring autonomous network operations. Additionally, Google Cloud may gain access to spare capacity in Liberty Global’s data centers, including those operated through the AtlasEdge joint venture.
The companies also plan to target small and medium-sized businesses with cloud, cybersecurity, and AI solutions, while responsibly exploring ways to monetize telecom data under strict privacy standards. As AI adoption accelerates across the telecom industry, this partnership positions both Google Cloud and Liberty Global at the forefront of digital innovation in Europe.
