The upcoming action RPG “Gotham Knights” will launch on fewer platforms than originally announced. The title was initially planned to be a cross-generation game, but developer Warner Bros. Games Montreal confirmed this week that it would no longer be released on PS4 and Xbox One consoles.
The change in the support platform “Gotham Knights” was confirmed on Tuesday. The developer did not provide much information on why they decided to cancel the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. But a new detail on the official FAQ page reads, “To provide players with the best possible gameplay experience, the game will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC and will not be available for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One consoles.” PC gamers will be able to purchase the title through Steam and Epic Games Store.
The cancellation of the “Gotham Knights” PS4 and Xbox One versions came a few months after WB Games Montreal confirmed the game had been delayed. Following its announcement in 2020, the developer planned for the game to be released the following year. However, the studio confirmed last June that its launch has been moved, and it is now slated to arrive on Oct. 25.
While the game is set in Gotham, fans of the franchise should not expect to see Batman in action. The developer has also clarified that the upcoming title’s plot is not connected to the “Batman: Arkham” series. The absence of the Dark Knight is actually central to the plot of “Gotham Knights.” The game will introduce an original story marked by the sudden disappearance of Batman, leading to the criminal underworld running over the city.
The task to protect Gotham will now fall on other members of the Batman Family, including Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin, who will all be playable characters in the game. “From solving mysteries that connect the darkest chapters in the city’s history to defeating notorious villains in epic confrontations, players will confront an array of challenges as they evolve into their own version of the Dark Knight,” the “Gotham Knights” description reads.
