NEW YORK , May 10, 2017 -- ICAP Patent Brokerage announces for sale a High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) patent portfolio. Of the 17 registered patents and applications within the portfolio, 10 are Standards Essential Patents (SEP’s).
“This is a rare opportunity for buyers to access a valuable portfolio of patents which are globally recognized as industry-wide standards,” says Paul Greco, Senior Vice President of ICAP Patent Brokerage.
Key Characteristics & Benefits
With a 2010 priority date, the portfolio for sale describes systems, methods, and apparatuses for encoding and decoding motion vectors in a video codec in which multiple reference pictures are allowed. Out of the portfolios 17 registered patents and applications, 10 are HEVC Standard Essential Patents (SEP’s) and are officially registered at the MPEG-LA HEVC Program (“HEVC Pool”). The 10 SEP’s consists of 5 US patents and 5 Korean patents.
The portfolio currently has earned 6.5 points as a licensor of the HEVC Pool. The remaining 7 patents and applications (5 Korean patents and 2 pending applications) will be evaluated in June, 2017 and are expected to earn 2.5 more points on the HEVC Pool in calendar year 2017. 4 more divisional applications may be filed to the USPTO with a possibility of earning 3 more points (which would equate to a total of 12 points by the end of 2019).
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is considered the successor to the widely-implemented H.264/MPEG-4, with a 50% reduction in bitrate requirements and the goal of allowing data compression ratios of 1000:1. HEVC is targeted at next-generation video and HDTVs (including 4K and 8K) displays and content capture systems.
