“His Dark Materials” Season 2 is set to start production this summer even though its predecessor hasn’t been aired yet. Apparently, BBC and HBO are so confident about the fantasy drama performing well that they are willing to take the risk of ordering a second installment before ratings come in.
Indeed, show producer Bad Wolf TV has already announced on Twitter that they are looking for a talented script editor to handle “His Dark Materials” Season 2, Business Times reported. At the moment, there’s still no news regarding how the showrunners will pace the story.
The series will be basing its plotline on Philip Pullman’s young-adult fantasy novels of the same name. Its first book is called “Northern Lights,” otherwise known as “The Golden Compass.” The story begins when young Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) discovers that someone is planning to assassinate her uncle, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy). The first installment could cover half the story of “The Golden Compass,” while “His Dark Materials” Season 2 finish the rest.
The showrunners certainly have a lot to work with given that there are multiple major events that took place in the first book. From Lyra inheriting the alethiometer, to the battle of the panserbjørnes, and Lord Asriel opening a door into another universe – the writers can divide this story easily. For instance, the first entry could end after Iorek Byrnison won his battle and “His Dark Materials” Season 2’s finale would have Lord Asriel killing Roger.
Of course, all of these are merely speculations and the showrunners could decide to stretch the first book in three or four seasons if they want. However, that all depends if the first and second installment is received positively by the fans. But judging by BBC and HBO’s decision, it’s likely that audiences will take a liking to the series. As for the release date of “His Dark Materials” Season 2, nothing has been confirmed so far. Right now, the first entry is speculated to drop in late 2019. If all goes well, the second installment could see a similar release date in 2020, especially since production for it but a few months away, KFTV reported.
