The Home Depot Foundation raised its commitment to veteran causes to $1 billion by 2032 and highlighted housing initiatives as federal data show 32,495 veterans experienced homelessness in January 2025.
In its Thursday, Oct. 22, announcement, the Foundation replaced a 2023 target of $750 million in veteran-cause investment by the end of fiscal 2030. The Foundation, a nonprofit supported by home improvement retailer The Home Depot, said it has invested more than $650 million since 2011 and improved more than 70,000 homes and facilities for veterans.
The latest federal count recorded 32,495 veterans experiencing homelessness on one night in January 2025. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) said the total was 1.2% below January 2024 and 56.1% below the 2010 count. The point-in-time count is a one-night measure, rather than an annual tally. The Foundation has said its work contributed to the decline, while the federal count does not isolate its funding's effect.
For housing access, the Foundation cited the Landlords, Organizations, and Veterans Engagement (LOVE) Fund with Open Doors Atlanta and the U.S.VETS Master Lease Program. Together, they are intended to address rental barriers such as deposits and application fees and support leasing homes directly from property owners.
Other grants will cover transitional housing repairs and renovations for permanent supportive housing with Operation Homefront and Community Solutions. The Foundation also cited modular homes through Purple Heart Homes. It said Team Depot will complete hundreds of veteran service projects across all 50 states and three U.S. territories during its annual Celebration of Service.
Erin Izen, executive director of The Home Depot Foundation, said, “We believe every veteran deserves a safe place to call home.” The announcement did not set annual spending targets or allocate funds among programs, leaving the timing and distribution of the $1 billion unspecified. The next federal point-in-time count is scheduled for January 2027, according to the VA.
