Hurricane Vance had maximum sustained winds of 110 mph late Friday, and the National Hurricane Center forecast more strengthening before a gradual decline, as swell threatens parts of Mexico’s coast.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) placed Vance about 385 miles (615 kilometers) south-southwest of Acapulco in its 11 p.m. ET Friday, Oct. 23, advisory (03:00 UTC Saturday). The hurricane was moving north-northwest at 7 mph (11 km/h). No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

The NHC forecast Vance’s winds to reach 105 knots by 8 a.m. ET Saturday (12:00 UTC), then ease to 100 knots by 8 p.m. ET Saturday (00:00 UTC Sunday). The 5 p.m. ET Friday forecast had projected the 105-knot mark by 2 a.m. ET Saturday, six hours earlier than the later advisory.

Swells may affect parts of southern and southwestern Mexico over the weekend and into next week, bringing hazardous surf and rip currents. The update follows an earlier report on Vance’s Category 2 strength. The NHC scheduled its next full advisory for 5 a.m. ET Saturday (09:00 UTC).
