Hyundai Mobis and Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. announced their partnership deal to develop a digital broadcasting system for vehicles. They will be introducing an advanced broadcast platform with a next-generation system in North America.
As per Korea Joongang Daily, Hyundai Mobis is now testing the in-vehicle broadcast platform that was created in collaboration with the largest media group in the U.S. The South Korean car parts company will be initiating a pilot project on digital broadcasting in the country, and it will be done together with Sinclair Broadcast Group.
The two companies will offer vehicle infotainment and data transmission systems formed based on ATSC 3.0 broadcasting standard. This is the latest standard, and compared to the previous ones, including the ATSC 1.0, this latest level offers better sound delivery and picture quality. This new standard will provide high resolutions of up to 8K, which is currently the highest resolution available for display panels.
Moreover, with the ATSC 3.0, the digital broadcasting systems of both Hyundai Mobis and Sinclair will have enhanced targeting features of distributing various content or ads to the consumers according to their geographic location. The new standard is also equipped with improved GPS to provide in-vehicle entertainment and emergency information in real-time.
“This collaboration is an important step towards realizing the promise of using ATSC 3.0 to communicate with the millions of vehicles on America’s roads and to greater serve the American public interest,” Sinclair’s president and chief executive officer, Chris Ripley, said in a press release for the initial signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) last month.
He added, “By collaborating with Hyundai Mobis, we can make these services seamless for consumers while providing the efficiency and robustness of ATSC 3.0 for service providers.”
Finally, as part of the agreement, Hyundai Mobis will be in charge of developing a system that can send and receive the new broadcasting spectrum in the vehicles' displays. It has already started the trial of the broadcasting system in Baltimore and Washington.
