Hyundai Motor Co. sold 49,815 units of Creta in India between January and April, up by 248 percent from the same period in 2020, to become the country's top-selling SUV.
Creta was the seventh-highest seller among all vehicles in India last year with 96,989 units.
Hyundai also sold 73,537 units of Creta in Russia last year, making it the best-selling model with a 28 percent share in the country’s SUV segment.
Between January and April this year, 25,768 units of Creta were sold in Russia, gaining 29 percent from the same period last year.
Indian drivers, according to analysts, prefer SUVs with tall vehicle bodies like Creta because of the often subpar road conditions in India.
Indian buyers currently must wait for up to nine months before getting their Creta delivered due to the auto industry's chip shortage and the skyrocketing demand for the model.
India’s auto magazine CarDekho noted that while the Hyundai Creta is cheaper than Tata’s Harrier SUV, it offers more functions.
