Indonesia’s Air Force (TNI AU) put a stretch of East Java’s Pasuruan-Probolinggo toll road through takeoff and landing trials Thursday, testing a fallback if an airport or base cannot support operations, ANTARA reported.

Two F-16 Fighting Falcons and two Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucanos took part. The trial covered 3.5 kilometers, from kilometer 834 to kilometer 837+500. The road is 24 meters wide.

The aircraft came from Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base in Malang and Iswahjudi Air Force Base in Madiun.

Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Mohamad Tonny Harjono said the road would serve as an alternative only in limited contingencies, including when an airport or air base could no longer support operations. He said public transportation would remain the road’s primary purpose, with road-user safety and the public interest prioritized.

Harjono said the exercise was the Air Force’s second toll-road runway test, following an earlier trial on the Terbanggi Besar toll road in Lampung on Feb. 11, 2026.

He said the Air Force had identified the Cibitung-Cilincing toll road and a planned toll road in Lombok as potential sites for more trials. Harjono said the service would coordinate with the Public Works Ministry to map roads that meet the requirements.
