BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2017 -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2017 -- As a veteran of multiple new generations of mobile technology over decades, InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) is in a unique position to understand how 5G will come to market. And while general industry consensus is that 5G will be “deployed” by 2020 and potentially as early as 2018, in truth 5G will be a staged project that will roll out over close to a decade. At Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona (February 27-March 2, 2017), InterDigital will illustrate the expected rollout of 5G through multiple demos representing unique stages in device and network deployment through 2025.
“At InterDigital, we’ve always prioritized an understanding of real-world scenarios and capabilities over some of the hype that can characterize our industry, and our presence this year in Barcelona is about aligning technologies with their expected rollout in a rational way – including technologies that won’t be pervasive in the market for the better part of a decade,” said Dr. Robert DiFazio, Vice President, InterDigital Labs. The company’s presence at MWC 2017 showcases 'The 5G Timeline' through the following technology demonstrations:
- 2018: This year is expected to bring the first version of 5G, focused primarily on enabling Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB). InterDigital will showcase “Personalized Virtual Reality” that can be enabled through the higher throughput and lower latency of 5G eMBB.
- 2019: 5G New Radio (NR) is expected to emerge as the core technology. With millimeter wave set to be a prime technology for 5G, InterDigital will demonstrate its 5G Access Platform that brings together millimeter wave radios and an ultra-low latency multi-hop system to showcase one example of a NR concept prototype.
- 2020: With 5G products and deployments expected to begin in earnest, new network topologies will be required to handle new use cases and increased network demands. InterDigital will showcase how the beginnings of 5G will be supported through its Next Generation IP Networking technology, which extends beyond 3GPP standards to ensure efficient network utilization and low latency for broadband content distribution.
- 2025 and beyond: Mature 5G that supports Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) as well as Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) are expected to arrive. InterDigital will showcase mission-critical, low-latency communications through its real-time 3D “Remote Surgery: 4G vs. 5G” game application, powered by Crosshaul with InterDigital’s EdgeLink™ 60Ghz Platform – a transport technology that aims to solve the architecture challenges of 5G and provides wireless connectivity within components of the new Radio Access Network.
In addition to demonstrations, InterDigital will host “Crosshaul – The Fusion of Fronthaul and Backhaul in 5G,” a live panel featuring industry leaders from Ericsson, 5TONIC, Telefonica, 5G Office of Taiwan, Nokia Bell Labs and InterDigital, on Tuesday, February 28 at 11:00 a.m. CET. The panel will also be available during and after the session on InterDigital’s website here.
Attendees of Mobile World Congress can see InterDigital’s 5G demos and IoT demos, at InterDigital’s pavilion in Hall 7, Stand 7C61.
