Iranian officials had not publicly identified the cause of reported blasts Saturday on Qeshm Island and in Jask, Reuters reported, days after U.S. forces struck the island.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency separately said two missiles struck Qeshm earlier Saturday. Iranian officials had not released details on possible damage. EconoTimes previously covered Tasnim’s account of two missiles hitting the island.
Qeshm lies in the Strait of Hormuz, and Jask is a port in southern Iran. Reuters placed the new reports days after U.S. forces hit Qeshm. A U.S. official whose name Reuters did not provide characterized the earlier operation as limited and said it was not a restart of major combat operations.
Reuters also reported that governments in the region had anticipated President Donald Trump might resume attacks after Tuesday’s midterm elections. In the weeks before the vote, Trump had held off on strikes on Iran, Reuters reported. Iran has repeatedly said it would retaliate for new attacks by targeting U.S. and Israeli sites in neighboring countries.
