Israel announced on Wednesday that it had killed Mohammad Odeh, the newly appointed head of Hamas’s armed wing in Gaza, as military operations intensified across Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank. The Israeli military said Odeh was killed during an airstrike in Gaza City on Tuesday.

According to relatives, Odeh died alongside his wife and son when an Israeli strike hit an apartment building in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood. Gaza health officials reported that at least six people were killed and more than 20 wounded in the attack, while rescue teams continued searching for survivors under the rubble.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Odeh previously led Hamas’ intelligence division during the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, which killed around 1,200 people according to Israeli figures. Netanyahu said Odeh had recently replaced Izz al-Din al-Haddad, another senior Hamas commander killed by Israel earlier this month.

Although Hamas has not officially confirmed Odeh’s appointment, sources close to the group described him as a leading figure within Hamas military leadership and a possible successor to Haddad. Israel has targeted numerous Hamas commanders since the Gaza war began in 2023, vowing to eliminate individuals connected to the October 7 attacks.

The latest strike comes as ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain stalled. Discussions over the second phase of the truce, including Israeli military withdrawals and Hamas disarmament, have made little progress.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also said Hamas would eventually lose both military and civilian control of Gaza. He added that Israel plans to implement what he described as a “voluntary migration” program for Gazans at a later stage.

Since the war started in October 2023, Gaza health authorities say more than 72,000 Palestinians have been killed, most of them civilians. Israel says its operations are focused on preventing future attacks while minimizing civilian casualties.
