Italy's data protection regulator informed OpenAI on Monday that their artificial intelligence chatbot application ChatGPT violates data protection regulations.
Italy Watchdog Believes OpenAI's ChatGPT Violates Privacy Rules
The Italian watchdog Garante, which is one of the European Union's most vigilant in monitoring AI platform compliance with the bloc's data protection regime, momentarily banned ChatGPT last year for allegedly violating EU privacy standards.
At the time, the agency initiated an investigation, which has now concluded that factors point to one or more probable data privacy violations, according to a statement, as per Reuters.
The Garante stated that Microsoft, which backs OpenAI, has 30 days to provide defense reasons, and that its probe will take into account the work of a European task force comprised of national privacy watchdogs.
Italy was the first Western European country to prohibit ChatGPT, whose fast growth has piqued the interest of lawmakers and authorities.
Under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which went into effect in 2018, any corporation found in violation of the guidelines might face fines of up to 4% of its global revenue.
In December, EU lawmakers and governments adopted provisional conditions for regulating AI systems like ChatGPT, taking a step closer to creating laws controlling the technology.
ChatGPT Creator Visits The Chip Facility Of Samsung Electronics
According to industry officials, Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, paid a visit to a Samsung Electronics semiconductor factory in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, on Friday to explore the combined development of AI chips.
The American entrepreneur, as per The Korea Times, met with Kyung Kye-hyun, head of Samsung's semiconductor unit, and a number of other high-level executives in charge of memory chip and foundry operations, who showed the OpenAI CEO around the facility. It is unusual for a Korean corporation to demonstrate its semiconductor production processes to an outsider.
Altman was anticipated to meet with Samsung Electronics' Executive Chairman, Lee Jae-yong. However, an anticipated court verdict on Lee's conspiracy accusations in connection with the contentious 2015 merger of Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries is said to have made it difficult for them to meet on this occasion.
Altman reportedly met with SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung shortly after visiting the Samsung factory. It's unclear whether their encounter was held at SK's semiconductor factory in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. According to sources acquainted with the situation, the AI billionaire was also set to meet with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won before leaving Korea on Friday evening.
Both Samsung and SK declined to acknowledge if its executives had met Altman.
OpenAI may eventually work with Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest foundry. Prior to Altman's journey to Korea, foreign news sites reported that he was in talks with Middle Eastern investors and chip fabricators, including TSMC, about starting a new chip company.
