Hyundai Motor, Nvidia, and the South Korean government are reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to establish a major artificial intelligence (AI) technology center in South Korea, according to a report by the Korea Economic Daily. The initiative highlights the country's growing ambitions to become a leading hub for AI innovation and advanced computing technologies.
The proposed AI research and development center is expected to be located at the Saemangeum reclamation project on South Korea’s southwest coast. Government and industry officials cited by local media indicate that Saemangeum has emerged as the preferred location due to its development potential and strategic importance for future technology investments.
The planned facility would resemble Nvidia’s existing AI and R&D centers in regions such as Singapore and Taiwan. Industry observers view the project as a natural extension of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Hyundai Motor and Nvidia in October 2025. Under that agreement, Nvidia committed to supplying Hyundai with high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) while both companies agreed to collaborate on AI infrastructure and research initiatives within South Korea.
The partnership reflects the increasing demand for AI computing power across industries, including automotive manufacturing, autonomous driving, robotics, and smart mobility solutions. Hyundai has been actively expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities, while Nvidia continues to strengthen its presence in global AI markets through strategic partnerships and infrastructure investments.
Adding further momentum to the project, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is scheduled to visit South Korea this week. During his visit, he is expected to meet Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung as well as several prominent South Korean business leaders. The meetings are anticipated to focus on AI development, semiconductor technology, and potential investment opportunities.
If finalized, the AI technology center could significantly enhance South Korea’s position in the global artificial intelligence sector, attracting additional investment, creating high-value jobs, and accelerating innovation across multiple industries. The project also underscores Nvidia’s expanding international footprint and Hyundai’s commitment to becoming a key player in the rapidly evolving AI-driven economy.
