Kyoto’s historic tea merchant Itohkyuemon is launching the autumn-exclusive Momiji Matcha Parfait Ice Cream Bar, featuring seasonal flavors like sweet potato Mont Blanc and candied chestnut. Priced at 740 yen, this limited-edition treat will be available at several Kyoto and Uji locations.
Itohkyuemon Unveils Fall-Themed Momiji Matcha Parfait Ice Cream Bar, Celebrating Seasonal Flavors
The vibrant colors and flavors of fall have arrived at 92-year-old tea merchant Itohkyuemon, per SoraNews24.
As matcha has become a staple in Japan’s dessert landscape, the distinction between tea merchant and confectioner is blurring for some companies. One prime example of this is Itohkyuemon, a Kyoto-based tea company founded in 1832, which has also gained fame for its stunning and delicious matcha parfait ice cream bars.
The matcha parfait bars have become so iconic that they are now featured on Itohkyuemon’s signage.
However, success as a confectioner in Japan requires attentiveness to seasonal trends, and Itohkyuemon excels in this regard. After offering unique hydrangea-themed matcha ice cream bars throughout the summer, the tea company is now introducing a new autumn-exclusive treat: the Momiji Matcha Parfait Ice Cream Bar.
"Momiji" refers to maple trees in Japanese, and the ice cream bar is dressed for the season with a gelatin maple leaf, a candied chestnut, and a swirl of sweet potato Mont Blanc (chestnut puree). It also includes a chocolate disc adorned with Itohkyuemon’s name in kanji, ensuring that, when fondly looking back on photos of this edible masterpiece, customers will remember where to find it—and where to get another when cravings strike.
Itohkyuemon’s Portable Momiji Matcha Parfait Ice Cream Bar Debuts Across Kyoto This Fall
The Momiji Matcha Parfait Ice Cream Bar offers a portable version of Itohkyuemon’s in-cafe Momiji Matcha Parfait.
Priced at 740 yen (approximately US$5.30), the bar will be available starting October 1 at several of Itohkyuemon’s branches, including Uji, Byodoin, Uji Station, Kyoto Station, Gion Yonjo, Sanjo Teramachi, and Kiyomizuzaka in Uji and Kyoto City. It will also arrive in Kyoto City at Itohkyuemon’s Kiyomizu Sanneizaka and Fushimi Inari locations on November 1.
