The biggest mystery to unravel in “Jane the Virgin” season 5 is Michael’s (Brett Dier) surprising return. Fans still have a couple of months to speculate on where Michael had been, but showrunner Jennie Urman already shut down the theory that he has a twin.
“Jane the Virgin” season 5 and its earlier installments are popular for taking on a telenovela-style of storytelling. Classic telenovelas are just over-the-top when it comes to plot twists and, frequently, the long-lost twin arc is used to introduce plot twists.
So it was understandable if fans considered the possibility that the “Michael” that Jane (Gina Rodriguez) met on the season 4 finale was just a twin brother. However, when asked about this fan theory, Urman did not hesitate to dismiss it. “It’s not a surprise twin, that I can tell you,” the showrunner previously told TVLine.
On the other hand, Urman did confirm that Sin Rostro a.k.a. Rose (Bridget Regan) had something to do with Michael’s fake death and sudden return. “There’s definitely a tie between him and Sin Rostro,” Urman said. This aspect alone offers many possible plots for “Jane the Virgin” season 5. Michael could be a victim or he could be working with the crime boss.
Another unanswered fan theory suggests that Jane and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) only met a fake Michael. Considering the massive use of Rose’s face-swapping tech, this is a big possibility for “Jane the Virgin” season 5.
Urman even encouraged the fake Michael theory speculation for “Jane the Virgin” season 5. The series creator said in the same interview, “Who knows? That is also going to be answered in the beginning of the fifth season. Rose has amazing face-swapping capabilities, as we’ve established. [Laughs] That’s certainly going to be one of the questions that needs to be asked and answered, especially when we continue to play out that scene.”
Unfortunately, “Jane the Virgin” season 5 is going to be the series’ final installment. It will premiere on Wednesday, March 27, at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
