Japanese snack maker Yaokin’s Twitter announcement of raising the price of its most popular line of snacks Umaibo by two yen created a buzz nationwide that it had to apologize for the decision.
According to Yaokin, the increase in the cost of Umaibo’s ingredients, shipping, and other expenses forced it to raise the price from 10 yen to 12 yen by April 1, 2022.
The company thanked its fans for their support that enabled it to keep the price at 10 yen for more than four decades.
Umaibo has been at its current ridiculously inexpensive price of 10 yen ever since it first went on sale in 1979.
While a two yen increase isn’t much, it’s still a sudden 20-percent jump at a time when Japan is seeing prices rise for a wide variety of consumer goods, without an equivalent wage hike.
Another factor is that for elementary school-age kids, the extra two yen is a bigger portion of their spending money than it is for older Umaibo fans.
