‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ recently unveiled its official trailer reuniting ‘The Matrix’ co-stars Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. Meanwhile, director Chad Stahelski revealed that a third film in the series is already in the works.
According to The Independent, Reeves reunited with his ‘The Matrix’ co-star Laurence Fishburne in the recently released official trailer for director Chad Stahelski’s upcoming second installment in the highly popular action-thriller series. The two worked together in the 1999 science-fiction and action film ‘The Matrix’ directed by the Wachowski Brothers Larry and Andy, now known as openly transgender women Lana and Lilly.
Stahelski returned to helm the film after directing the first installment together with ‘The Matrix’ co-stuntman David Leitch. Stahelski directs a screenplay prepared by Derek Kolstad.
Reeves and Fishburne are joined by Bridget Moynahan, Common, Ruby Rose, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, Lance Reddick, Thomas Sadoski, David Patrick Kelley, and Peter Stormare in the new cast. Reeves is set to reprise his role as the titular protagonist John Wick, a highly-skilled and extremely dangerous hitman forced out of retirement by a former associate who threatened to take over an international assassin’s guild.
In the first film, John left his peaceful retired life to seek revenge against a mob that stole his car and killed his puppy, which was a gift from his late wife. It seems that John would be battling with even more of the world’s deadliest killers in the upcoming sequel.
The new trailer opened in Rome and introduced rapper and producer Common as one of the film’s main antagonists. Ruby Rose of ‘Orange Is the New Black’ fame also appeared as she fought against Reeve’s John.
Meanwhile, according to Collider, Stahelski teased that a third film is in the works. During an interview at the New York Comic-Con, Stahelski revealed, “The studio has asked us to put our heads together and see if we can come up with something. Winston’s [McShane] is a big part of the next one, so is Lance Reddick. We’ve got some ideas.”
He went on to talk about the upcoming second film saying, “When it came to coming up with a story idea, we had like ten bad ideas, and they we were like, ‘f*ck it,’ what would have just happened the next day. Once we stopped worrying about ourselves, it was fun.”
Stahelski continued, “Is it as good as the first one? I don’t know, that’s personal opinion. Did we go better in some ways? Yes. Did we explore the character more? Yes. It’s better, I think, technically. Is the enjoyment better? Yes, it’s there, but it’s completely different.”
‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ is an upcoming action-thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad and is scheduled to premiere in theaters on February 10, 2017. It is intended as the sequel to the 2014 film ‘John Wick’, which received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The first film earned $76.24 million at the worldwide box office.
