Following the humorous Tweet by Bethesda addressing the recent leak of numerous titles by Walmart, it’s not exactly surprising that Rage 2 has just been confirmed to be in development. What is surprising is the fact that Avalanche Studios, the developers of the Just Cause franchise, is involved in creating the sequel to the id Software shooter.
The first Rage game was not exactly a critical and commercial hit, which was surprising coming from the storied studio behind Doom and the publisher of games like The Elder Scrolls series. Even so, it seems Bethesda still had enough faith in the franchise to revive it and give the reins to someone else. According to the game’s official website, it was developed in association with Avalanche Studios, which could mean any number of things.
A new trailer for the game was just released, as well, which contain gameplay footage and a brief look into the world of the game. While it is difficult to draw a conclusion from just this one series of scenes, the clip immediately shows that Rage 2 has more character and tries to be more charming than its predecessor.
At the very least, it will feature a more lighthearted tone than the first game, Gamespot reports. Rage 1 was widely panned for being uninspired and mediocre, which turned many fans of the genre off.
For the time being, the only things that are known about the game is that it’s set in a post-apocalyptic future, it’s an open-world title, and it features characters that would not be out of place in a Mad Max movie. In fact, Avalanche Studios created the engine that was used to make the 2015 Mad Max game.
Based on the simple fact that the same people who made Just Cause 3 are involved in making Rage 2, gives gamers hope that it will at least be somewhat of a fun game. If not, this shooter might just be a flop before it is ever released.
