Kawhi Leonard is expected to make a decision on July 4 regarding where he’s going to sign next. There are three favorites at the moment: The Lakers, Clippers, and the Raptors.
It’s still unclear, however, which among the three is the most likely to land Kawhi Leonard. Adrian Wojnarowski said that all three teams had been warned not to leak any information about what they’ve discussed about lest they want to hurt their chances at acquiring the newly-minted Finals MVP.
Kawhi Leonard will ruin NBA if he joins the Lakers, Max Kellerman believes
So it comes as to no surprise that there aren’t concrete rumors about Kawhi Leonard and what his plans are. But that doesn’t stop analysts from speculating how his decision will shape the league in the years to come.
NBA pundit Stephen A. Smith believes that if the Lakers land Kawhi Leonard, they’d win the 2019-2020 Playoffs no problem. Max Kellerman, on the other hand, said that if that were to happen, then Leonard will “destroy the NBA.”
The narrative, of course, is centered on the fact that Kawhi Leonard joining LeBron James and Anthony Davis with the Lakers would turn the team into an unstoppable juggernaut. However, Kellerman clarified that the move wouldn’t be as bad as what Kevin Durant did when he joined the Warriors. But it’s still worrying, especially with other teams not having the same caliber as the talents found in the Lakers’ roster.
New York Knicks abandons their pursuit of Kawhi Leonard due to poor chances
Meanwhile, the New York Knicks have altogether abandoned its effort in acquiring Kawhi Leonard. The reason behind the decision is due to the organization failing to sign Kevin Durant. With no superstar on the team, the Knicks believe that its chances of landing The Claw are poor that’s why they concentrated their efforts in trying to persuade other free agents. Which, unfortunately, didn’t pan out as well.
As for the Toronto Raptors, sports analyst Jalen Rose said that the team is the favorite to snatch Kawhi Leonard, with their chances at 99 percent. But seeing how all the recent predictions fell flat, it’s best to remain skeptical for now. This is doubly true since we’re talking about Leonard, one of the most enigmatic players in the league today.
