TROY, Mich., May 08, 2018 -- National Teacher Appreciation Day serves as a reminder to schools, parents and communities to honor and appreciate the daily contributions teachers make to students’ lives. In celebration, Nicolae Boariu has been selected by Kelly Educational Staffing (KES®), a specialty service of Kelly Services®, as the National Substitute Teacher of the Year for the 2017-18 school year. Boariu’s recognition is based on his outstanding performance and exemplary service as a substitute teacher at Mohawk Elementary School in Bessemer, Pennsylvania.
After an impressive 30-year career in law enforcement, Boariu retired and started serving as a substitute teacher in the Mohawk Area School District. As a Bessemer resident, he has aided his community through his role as resident substitute teacher at Mohawk Elementary.
“Mr. B., as he is affectionately known here at Mohawk, is a one-of-a-kind person,” said Assistant to the Superintendent Dr. Lorree Houk. “His commitment to the Mohawk community is evident each and every day as he works with students and staff. Mr. B’s willingness to continue to serve even in retirement is a testament to his true character. He is the number-one substitute teacher here at Mohawk and is well-deserving of the KES National Substitute of the Year award.”
Boariu floats from classroom to classroom and is loved and appreciated by students and teachers alike. With a history of success, he was honored as the district’s employee of the month in 2017 and was recognized as substitute teacher of the month by KES in early 2018. He is especially cherished in the special education department, where he “has great rapport with all of the students and is always willing to help – regardless of their challenges,” said Instructional Support Paraprofessional Karen Leckwart.
Brad J. Meehan, principal of Mohawk Elementary, nominated Boariu for this award. “During the time Mr. Boariu has worked in the district, I have found him to be dependable, flexible, efficient, kind, punctual and extremely professional,” Meehan said. “He genuinely cares about the students and takes the time to know them and understand them. The students care about ‘Mr. B’ as well – he is one of the most popular adults in the building.”
Each year, as part of a long-standing tradition and an integral component in recognizing substitute teachers and paraprofessionals for their success, Kelly Services field managers across the U.S. have the opportunity to nominate individuals for the state and national teacher of the year awards.
“It’s teachers like Mr. Boariu who create a successful learning environment in the classroom and facilitate the continuity of student achievement each and every day,” said Nicola Soares, vice president and managing director of Kelly Educational Staffing. “We’re proud to honor Mr. Boariu for his commitment to the community and the care and inspiration he instills in the students at Mohawk Elementary.”
