Android Wear has been releasing Android smartwatches for some time and it would seem that Google is thinking about launching two new ones in 2017, which will be their flagship units. The smartwatches will arrive in the market in Q1, according to Google, but will not have the Google brand nor that of its new Pixel line.
The Verge spoke with Android Wear product manager at Google, Jeff Chang who confirmed that the two smart wear products would be the flagship units of the company’s Android Wear 2.0 line. The two wearables will also apparently be the first to be launched on the new platform.
Right now, the name of the devices or their manufacturer is unknown, as Chang refused to give out the details on those particular topics. However, he did say that this is a company that Google collaborated with in the past and thus has experience when it comes to making Android smartwatches.
It’s basically like how Google produced its Nexus smartphone devices. The tech giant partnered with another company, provided it with specifications and the software, and let them do the heavy lifting. Based on that trend, it would be safe to say that Google might eventually start making its own line of smartwatches just as it did with the Pixel smartphones.
Upon launch of the devices, Android Wear 2.0 will also be released to all devices that are supported by the update, Droid-Life reports. There is also the Developer Preview feature that is expected to come out in January of next year.
In any case, this commitment by Google is a sign that it still believes that there is a demand for smart devices in the market that can be worn around the wrist. Recent data certainly seems to indicate a rise in demand for wearables, though the market is still dominated by brands like Fitbit.
