Malaysia Aviation Group has agreed to acquire Airbus’ Sepang Aircraft Engineering (SAE) business as the state-owned aviation company looks to strengthen its aircraft maintenance operations and generate more revenue from third-party airline customers.
The acquisition will integrate SAE’s capabilities into Malaysia Aviation Group’s MAB Engineering business. SAE specializes in maintenance services for Airbus A320-family aircraft and also operates a dedicated aircraft paint hangar and provides component repair services.
Malaysia Aviation Group said the transaction supports its long-term strategy of expanding its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operations while building a broader aviation services portfolio. Combining the two businesses is expected to increase the range of engineering and maintenance services the group can provide to airlines across Southeast Asia and other international markets.
The expansion could also help Malaysia Aviation Group reduce its reliance on revenue generated by its own airline operations by attracting more external customers. Aircraft maintenance has become an increasingly important business area as carriers seek reliable engineering capacity to support growing fleets and keep aircraft in service.
The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia. Malaysia Aviation Group expects the acquisition to be completed in 2027.
The deal comes as airlines continue to navigate volatile fuel prices and uncertainty across the global aviation industry. Against that backdrop, carriers and aviation groups are increasingly focused on controlling costs, improving operational efficiency and developing additional sources of revenue.
Malaysia Aviation Group said it intends to prioritize investments where it sees a clear opportunity to generate sustainable long-term value. The company did not disclose the financial terms of its agreement with Airbus.
Once completed, the SAE acquisition is expected to strengthen MAB Engineering’s position in the regional aircraft maintenance market while giving Malaysia Aviation Group additional opportunities to serve Airbus operators and other airline customers beyond its existing aviation businesses.
