Meta Platforms is preparing to unveil its first augmented reality (AR) glasses at the upcoming Connect event. Alongside the AR launch, Meta will introduce AI updates, including celebrity voice features for its chatbot, marking a pivotal moment in the company's metaverse vision.
Meta to Introduce Celebrity Voices for Chatbot as It Prepares AR Glasses Launch at Connect
Meta Platforms, Facebook's parent company, is preparing to commence its annual Connect conference at its California headquarters. The conference is anticipated to feature the unveiling of its first augmented reality (AR) spectacles and updates on its virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) products. According to a report by Reuters, one of the anticipated updates is a new audio feature that will enable users to select celebrity accents, including those of Judi Dench and John Cena, for its ChatGPT-like chatbot.
The unveiling of the AR spectacles is a momentous occasion for Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has prioritized augmented reality as a critical component of the company's transition to immersive "metaverse" technologies since 2021. However, Meta has encountered technical difficulties in the development of AR products. The chief of Reality Labs, Meta's metaverse-focused division, acknowledged last year that a commercially viable product was still "a few years away."
Meta has made substantial investments in AI, AR, and other metaverse technologies, contributing to its projected capital expenses in 2024, which are anticipated to be between $37 billion and $40 billion. Despite this investment, Reality Labs has experienced financial difficulties, as evidenced by its $8.3 billion loss in the first half of 2023 and $16 billion in 2022.
According to reports, Meta's AR glasses' initial iteration is expected to be priced at tens of thousands of dollars per unit and distributed exclusively to internal teams and select developers. Meta intends to introduce a consumer version by 2027 when technological advancements are anticipated to decrease production costs.
Meta Nears AR Glasses Prototype Launch, Expands Success with Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Collaboration
In a recent interview, Zuckerberg alluded to the advancements, stating that Meta is "pretty close" to revealing its first AR prototype. The company has not yet issued an official statement regarding these intentions.
In the interim, Meta has succeeded with its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which have garnered popularity due to the integration of an AI-powered digital assistant announced at the Connect conference last year. EssilorLuxottica, the manufacturer of Ray-Ban, reported that the new generation of intelligent spectacles sold more units in a few months than the previous version in two years, even though Meta has not disclosed sales figures. Since the 2022 update, IDC, a market research firm, has estimated that more than 700,000 pairs have been dispatched.
Meta has expanded its partnership with EssilorLuxottica and is contemplating an investment in the eyewear company, which has sparked speculation that its AR spectacles could be marketed under the Ray-Ban brand. Furthermore, Meta intends to introduce a new iteration of smart glasses equipped with a viewfinder to display introductory text and images. The company has improved the AI assistant's functionality by implementing software updates. One recently implemented update enables the glasses to identify and provide information about objects the user observes.
