Former first lady Michelle Obama and current first lady Dr. Jill Biden have forged a friendship just like their husbands that has since continued after they left the White House for some time. Mrs. Obama recently shared that Dr. Biden sent her a care package from the White House.
Michelle took to Instagram to share a photo of a basket of fresh vegetables sent to her by Dr. Biden from the White House Kitchen garden that she planted back in 2009 when she was the first lady. The garden on the South Lawn provides locally-grown produce for the first family and their guests. It also serves as a model of how food can be grown at home. The White House Kitchen Garden was a project near and dear to the former first lady, who also wrote a book about it back in 2012.
“So thankful for this beautiful care package from our amazing @FLOTUS! These fresh veggies from the White House Kitchen Garden were such a wonderful -- and delicious surprise. Love you, Jill!” wrote Michelle in the caption. Dr. Biden then responded with “Food is love” with a green heart emoji in the comments.
The former first lady’s immediate successor, Melania Trump, also used the White House Kitchen Garden as a way to work with the youth. In 2017, Melania invited the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington DC to join her in planting vegetables. With the care package sent to Michelle, Dr. Biden seems determined to continue on with the tradition of making use of the garden.
Meanwhile, the former first lady is set to release a paperback version of her bestselling memoir “Becoming,” and a new version which is aimed toward young readers. Michelle broke the news on social media on Wednesday. Both editions are set to be out on March 2. The young adult-version of the memoir follows other popular memoirs that have been revised to suit younger readers like “I am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai and “Life in Motion” by Misty Copeland.
While the new version makes it suitable to read for younger readers, a special introduction to the book includes the former first lady noting that it will not gloss over the “hard truths.”
