Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is reportedly turning to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), to help address growing infrastructure demands at GitHub as AI-powered software development continues to accelerate.
According to a Business Insider report published Tuesday, GitHub plans to expand its computing capacity using AWS resources despite Microsoft's long-term objective of fully migrating the platform to its Azure cloud infrastructure by 2027. The report cited sources familiar with the matter who said the move is intended to ease capacity constraints caused by a rapid increase in developer activity.
The growing popularity of artificial intelligence coding tools has significantly increased the amount of software being created and shared through GitHub. These AI-driven solutions enable developers to write, test, and deploy code more efficiently, resulting in a sharp rise in platform usage.
GitHub Chief Operating Officer Kyle Daigle previously noted that GitHub commits, a key metric that tracks code changes, are projected to reach 14 billion in 2026. That figure represents a dramatic increase from approximately 1 billion commits recorded in 2025, highlighting the explosive growth of AI-assisted software development.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that GitHub currently relies on multiple cloud providers to support its operations. While the company did not specifically comment on AWS, it acknowledged that the rise of “agentic development,” where AI systems play a more active role in software creation, has placed unprecedented pressure on GitHub’s infrastructure.
To meet increasing demand, Microsoft is accelerating GitHub’s transition to Azure while also maintaining a multi-cloud strategy designed to ensure reliability, scalability, and performance. Industry observers view the decision as a practical response to surging workloads and infrastructure challenges.
The report also noted that GitHub has experienced dozens of significant service outages this year as platform activity continued to climb. By leveraging additional cloud capacity, Microsoft aims to improve system stability and support the growing number of developers and organizations relying on GitHub for AI-driven software development and collaboration.
