More than 30 people were temporarily arrested in Frankfurt after unrest following youth rallies, as Germany’s interior minister called for tough penalties for looting and rioting, Reuters reported.

Frankfurt police reported broken windows and petrol bombs thrown toward emergency crews, Reuters said. HR reported the temporary arrests but gave no details about the detainees.

Demonstrations drew tens of thousands across dozens of German cities, Reuters reported. Gen Z regelt led the rallies, which called for education changes and help with living costs.

In comments to Bild cited by Reuters, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said authorities would identify people involved in looting and rioting and pursue tough penalties. He credited a broad police deployment across several sites with keeping the disorder from escalating further.

Reuters reported that Dobrindt blamed “violent left-wing groups” and people he labeled “troublemakers from the migrant community” for disrupting otherwise peaceful demonstrations; he offered no details. He said police had averted violence on the scale of events in Paris, Reuters reported. Protests in France were mostly peaceful for a third consecutive weekend, Reuters said, after Oct. 17 riots and looting damaged shops, public buildings and businesses.

An earlier EconoTimes report on a separate Frankfurt police notice said police reported property damage, theft and serious attacks on officers after an Oct. 31 assembly.
