North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) serves as the official provider of anesthesia services at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. Once the incident began, the anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and administrative staff that comprise the anesthesia department sprang into action. As one victim after another was brought into the OR for emergency surgery, NAPA’s staff was there, working with the entire Bronx Lebanon team to save lives – despite the fact that their own lives were in imminent danger.
One week later, on Friday, July 7, 2017 a press conference was held at Bronx Lebanon to tell the human side of this tragedy – stories of bravery, teamwork and compassion. Everyone working at the hospital that day instinctively came together to comfort the wounded, help families and visitors to safety, and without hesitation or concern for their own well-being, save the lives of five individuals.
“The code was called when the incident began around 2:45 … we were in the ED [Emergency Department], when the patients started coming in,” said NAPA physician Dave Livingstone, MD, Chief of Anesthesia at Bronx Lebanon. “The first two [victims] arrived in bad condition. We intubated them and got them up to the OR quickly, and then in short order the rest of the victims were brought in, so we had five ORs running simultaneously.”
“Professionalism, grace under pressure, extreme bravery – that truly describes Dr. Livingstone and his team on that that terrible day,” said NAPA CEO John Di Capua, MD. “The entire staff at Bronx Lebanon – administration, clinicians and staff – demonstrated laser-like focus and complete dedication to the task at hand, despite the obvious threat to themselves. We are proud to be partnered with such an incredible team of medical professionals.”
