FC Barcelona, one of the world’s most popular professional soccer teams, has set out to officially enter the world of non-fungible tokens by creating its own digital assets. The football club that is also colloquially known as Barçais has joined forces with Onwix, an Israel-based NFT marketplace, to release a series of NFTs.
According to Fortune, FC Barcelona is planning to launch digital tokens featuring or related to some of the most unforgettable moments in the club’s entire 122-year history. It was said that each of the NFTs will show a still image or short video clip of some selected key moments.
The FC Barcelona NFTs will be released and sold through Ownix’s platform. It was reported that the NFT marketplace is quite new and was only established early this year.
The Spanish football club is the latest sports team to join the non-fungible token market. The National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and even World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) have all entered the NFT sphere already, which just proved the growing popularity of the blockchain-based digital assets.
“Barça has a very large fanbase around the world and is leading the way in the digital domain with over 400 million followers in social networks,” FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, said in the announcement.
He went on to explain, “Given this scenario, the Club is constantly looking for new ways to connect with its fans, and we believe that creating these NFTs is a unique opportunity to continue growing and consolidating the Barça brand by bringing unique moments that have made Barça fans dream and FC Barcelona a well-known club on every level.”
CoinDesk mentioned that the FC Barcelona NFTs would be up for auction at Ownix, which is a marketplace based on the Ethereum blockchain. As posted on the countdown timer at the NFT marketplace’s website, the football club’s digital tokens would be officially unveiled on Nov. 24.
Finally, fans can expect to see extraordinary images and videos in the series of FC Barcelona NFT collections. There will be a trophy display of the club’s 95 domestic and international wins as well as 26 national league games. Five UEFA Champions League titles will also be included in the displays.
