NEW YORK, Feb. 09, 2017 -- At the end of the settlement date of January 31, 2017, short interest in 2,352 Nasdaq Global MarketSM securities totaled 7,153,961,241 shares compared with 7,113,199,016 shares in 2,355 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of January 13, 2017. The end-of-January short interest represents 4.86 days average daily Nasdaq Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 5.37 days for the prior reporting period.
Short interest in 793 securities on The Nasdaq Capital MarketSM totaled 684,855,487 shares at the end of the settlement date of January 31, 2017 compared with 652,694,509 shares in 778 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 2.26 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period’s figure of 3.16.
In summary, short interest in all 3,145 Nasdaq® securities totaled 7,838,816,728 shares at the January 31, 2017 settlement date, compared with 3,133 issues and 7,765,893,525 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 4.41 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 5.07 days for the previous reporting period.
