A startup named Humane, created by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has unveiled a unique product—a $699 lapel pin.
This innovative device, named the Humane AI Pin, is set to redefine how we use technology in our daily lives. The AI Pin is not just a decorative accessory; it's a full-fledged gadget meant to take the place of your smartphone. It enables users to make calls, send texts, and access information just by using their voice.
A Leap in Wearable Technology
The AI Pin stands out with its laser display feature, which projects information like time, date, or directions onto the user's palm, turning it into a sort of mini-screen. Chaudhri emphasized during their product launch that the device is designed with privacy in mind. It only activates upon the user's interaction, be it through voice, touch, gestures, or the laser display.
However, this convenience comes with a price tag. Apart from the initial cost, there is a $24 monthly data fee, partnering with T-Mobile for service. The pin also operates independently, meaning it doesn't require a connected smartphone, unlike most smartwatches.
This launch follows Humane's earlier announcement in March of securing a whopping $100 million in financing from notable investors like Microsoft, LG's venture arm, and Tiger Global. To date, the company has amassed over $200 million, with significant contributions from individuals like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.
Advanced Features for Modern Users
The AI Pin, powered by a Qualcomm chipset, also features a speaker and camera. A light indicator shows when these are active, and users can simply double-tap the pin to snap photos or videos, which can be accessed through Humane's web application.
Notably, the device offers real-time translation between Spanish and English, demonstrating its potential to break language barriers. It also connects users to various AI services from the internet without the need for downloaded apps. These services include accessing music on Tidal and utilizing large language models for information queries.
Pre-orders for the AI Pin will start on November 16, marking a significant step in wearable technology.
