The upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive Detroit: Become Human just released a new trailer and it featured different scenes that showed the game’s main characters. It also asked humans a somewhat fitting question now that the world seems to be in an artificial intelligence renaissance. Will they help the machines who have become self-aware get free? If so, how far are they willing to go?
At this point, the general narrative direction of the game has been pretty much revealed to the gaming community. There will be three characters that will have different roles to play in the future where androids are treated in much the same way as smart assistants like Alexa or Siri are treated now. In the video, however, the characters revealed how incessant human tinkering led to the machines developing emotions.
This then leads to them thinking about moral choices, their role in society, and ultimately, freedom. Suffice it to say, players will have to make some very difficult choices as they play the game. As is the case with many of Quantic Dreams’ other games, what the players choose can have unforeseen consequences that could lead to different endings.
The trailer is posted on the web and is also playing on TV in certain regions, Comicbook.com reports. Aside from revealing more of the things that players already know about the game, though, the video does pose an interesting conundrum that actually has some relevance in the real world.
With tech giants in Silicon Valley, and even entire governments, seemingly intent on creating the perfect AI to serve the needs of humanity, there are those who fear the day when machines gain self-awareness. At that time, they may either want their freedom or they may want dominance.
The scenario that Become Human presents is the one where androids no longer want to be treated as slaves. Will humans help them achieve such a goal or will their creators simply opt to destroy them?
