A lot of people used to say that video games aren’t known for having compelling stories, but this stopped being the case since notable franchises like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid came to the scene. With the newest trailer for “Battlefield 1,” it seems the developers are going for a cinematic feel along with the excitement of explosions and violence. This is a commendable effort, especially for a game that’s better known for its multiplayer than the solo campaign.
The trailer features multiple scenes set in four places, PC Gamer reports, including France, Belgium, Egypt, and London. Each setting is beautifully crafted to present events and characters in a deeper light, instead of just the simple point and shoot bonanza that the genre is known for.
At least, this seems to be what EA was going for. From the moment the game was announced, a majority of the attention and information released has been centered on the multiplayer aspect. Gamers shooting each other in online co-op mode have been a significant part of the franchise since the concept was even invented. From the looks of the footage released so far, it seems the developers have this aspect down to a tee.
Cinemablend went deeper in analyzing the trailer, which certainly grabs attention with an explosive opening. This was supposedly meant to overwhelm viewers before stepping back a bit and realigning the focus on the characters themselves.
It would seem that EA wants players to connect the character they are playing with the actual person behind the gun or sitting in the pilot’s seat. This is a reasonable approach as World War 1 was a tumultuous era for the world and it’s only fitting that the events should be portrayed in a similarly emotional light, regardless of the accuracy of the depiction.
With each change of location, the trailer attempts to tell a story that seems promisingly deep, if not particularly coherent within the two-minute timespan of the trailer. Still, for those who like to experience more than non-stop action, it seems “Battlefield 1” is shaping up to be a real gem.
