Secret contents or features remaining hidden in games for years or even decades is nothing new. Many classic titles had Easter Eggs that took extensive research and digging through code to find. It seems the sci-fi hack n’ slash game NieR: Automata is no different. According to the developers of the game, it still holds a secret that players can unlock and it’s apparently of the “unpleasant” variety.
This new development came by way of an interview with the developers that was published in Japan’s Weekly Famitsu in honor of the game’s one-year anniversary. The translation was courtesy of Gematsu, which revealed that there is still something valuable to find in the title. Unfortunately, the developers are being really coy about it.
“It will definitely be unpleasant, so the developers will not officially announce what it is. For various reasons, this specification was put into the game. If they are more detailed about what it is, problems might occur, so they cannot say anything more. It is the final secret of NieR: Automata…” one of the notable tidbits of the interview reads.
Following the publication of this interview, fans of the game immediately launched into speculation mode, with many wondering what exactly this secret is and how they can access it. As Kotaku notes, the interview also hints at a possible way to perform certain tasks in the game by using the controls in specific ways. Perhaps this has something to do with it, perhaps not.
In any case, it’s clear that NieR: Automata is proving to have some staying power, if only because of the scantily clad androids in the game. Of course, with gamers being gamers, many are simply accusing the developers of trolling and demanding that they release a patch for the PC version. In the latter case, the players actually do have a point that simply needs to be addressed.
